History
Taxi Nyköping - Oxelösund AB is the oldest taxi company in the Nyköping - Oxelösund area and dates back to 1927 when Nyköping cab owners' association was set up. The name later changed to Taxi Nyköping, and in 1988 Taxi Nyköping joined Oxelösund Taxi and formed Taxi Nyköping - Oxelösund AB.
Cab transport in Nyköping actually goes back even further. The predecessor to the cab owners' association, which used horse-drawn cabs, was called the Town of Nyköping's Haulage and Cab Transport Association. Cars started appearing on the streets of Nyköping in the early 1900's. By the early 1920's cars dominated the scene and the last horse-drawn cab disappeared in 1923. The horse-drawn cabs parked on Behmbrogatan by the Fenix pharmacy, i.e. Westerlingska Gården. When cars arrived, the parking areas moved to what is now called Smörtorget (Butter Market), behind the old Town Hall.
The early cars lacked the comfort of today's vehicles. They were open-top and the hood put up as protection against the weather did little to help against the cold. Seventy years ago, cars suffered with many other teething problems. For example, the spokes were made of wood and in warm weather the wheels dried out and started to creak. The driver had to throw a bucket of water over the wheels, or drive through puddles if it had rained.
Driving wasn't much fun, especially if you were overtaken by a horse-drawn cab, which was actually not unusual. Under the "Royal Ordinance on Automobile Traffic" from 1920 automobiles in built up areas were not permitted to drive faster than 20 km per hour in daylight, 15 km per hour in the dark, and 10 km per hour in fog.
